Voopoo Drag Q Kit – A MTL Drag!
Yes folks, there is another new kit from Voopoo this month, and indeed, we will be looking at it as we always do! Courtesy of the Alice from Voopoo (thank you!), we have for review today the Drag Q Kit !
Another Drag? Again? Oh yessur! But this one is quite different from the rest of the Drags that have come in the last 2 years or so. From the original Drag X/S that used the PnP coil platform, to the Drag X/S Pro that moved on to the TPP coil platform, the Drag Q comes to us today using the ITO coil platform which we’ve seen (and reviewed on the blog) with the Doric 20 Pod Kit.
As always, my review will be from my own experience of using the device as a regular vaper, as most of you vapers buying this device will be.
Packaging and Contents
I was sent a sample pack that included:
- Drag Q device.
- ITO-XPod has a 3.5 mL capacity and top-fill.
- 1 x ITO M0 0.5 ohm coil.
- 1 x ITO M3 1.2 ohm coil.
- USB-C cable.
- User Manual.
Salient Features include:
- The mod has a 1250 mAh battery.
- Generates up to 25W in power that auto-adjusts depending on coil used and draw intensity.
- With an output voltage of 3.2-4.2V.
- As mentioned, the first Drag to use the ITO coil platform.
- Indicator light bar to show battery life.
- Auto-draw and fire button-draw.
- Airflow control.
- And of course, has the standard protections we are familiar with.
Impressions and Experience
The kit comes in a classy black box with a coloured photo of the kit in front, and contents, kit features, Voopoo’s socials, and standard warning language written around the box. An inner box pulls out to reveal a small box containing kit accessories, and underneath this box is a plastic tray that neatly presents the device and pod. Compact and simple packaging always bode well for me.
The kit put together looks like a classic MTL kit, almost like a small box mod and a tank. That is because the ITO-X Pod resembles a small MTL atomiser, and the Drag Q device kind of looks like a tall and thin internal battery mod, which it kind of is except that it doesn’t have a 510 connection. But the kit looks and feels good on the hand, is very ergonomically shaped, and is lightweight and portable.
A. Drag Q Device/Mod
The mod’s dimensions come out at 23 x 32 x 77.3 mm per the user manual. It’s not tiny but it’s not tall either; it fits just right on the palm. Looking at it from the top down, it has a teardrop shape that is wide where the Drag branding is, and narrows towards the indicator light panel.
As a Voopoo product, and a Drag one at that, this kit has bold branding with “Drag” embossed on the stitched leather part. But since the way the branding is done seems to meld together with the rest of the mod, I didn’t really mind it as much as I normally would with loudly branded products.
The metal (zinc alloy?) portion of the device is essentially the device frame where you will find:
Top: coil contacts and microphone for auto-draw, and airflow control ring underneath.
Bottom: USB-C port and the mod’s rubberised base.
Narrow side: fire button and indicator panel.
Simplicity is the theme of this device, particularly in its operation:
- 5 clicks on and off.
- Automatic power adjustment depending on coil used and draw intensity. So, there is no need (or no ability) to manually adjust power levels.
- 1 click to fire and also show battery levels following the same green (> 60%), blue (> 30 to 60%), and red (< 30%) system.
- Auto-draw by simply taking a puff!
- The fire button is disabled when not used after 5 minutes, however, the auto-draw remains active. I suppose if you cannot wait 5 minutes, it’s best to turn off the device to prevent accidental presses of the fire button in the pocket or purse.
The mod is very well built, without any rattling parts, and finished smoothly without any sharp edges or glue sticking out. Together with the ITO-X Pod, I have to say that this is probably the most “grown-up” Drag I have ever used; it looks mature and distinguished which is probably more age-appropriate for me!
With regard to the airflow control, it reminds me of the airflow control we’ve seen in the Drag X Pro, with the knurled metal airflow ring. Spinning the ring to the left makes the draw tighter, and of course, looser when spun in the opposite direction. I found the airflow control to be highly effective: you can get a draw anywhere from a very tight MTL to RDTL. The air gets in from this ring to the bottom of the coil travelling upwards, which always helps with flavour.
The mod fires very quickly, as I’ve come to expect from Voopoo devices of late. And this is the case whether I used the fire button or just took a puff on auto-draw. However, the draw is a tad warmer when I used the fire button, and so I found myself using the fire button more when vaping with the higher ohm coil (the ITO M3). If you have been reading my reviews for a while, then you will know how much I like a warm MTL draw!
B. ITO-X Pod and Coils
As I mentioned earlier, this pod actually does look like a proper atomiser at first glance! It is made from what I would assume to be PCTG and is not tinted which always helps in seeing E-liquid levels.
It comes with a proprietary MTL drip tip which attaches as a sleeve to the top cap. It’s a drip tip that narrows in the middle and is very comfortable to use, I must admit. I am not quite sure why Voopoo opted for a proprietary drip tip- I wish they hadn’t so that vapers may be able to use their preferred MTL 510 drip tip.
The top cap (where the branding is printed stylishly on) unscrews from the rest of the pod with a quarter turn. This was actually quite refreshing for me to see as it means no more rubber bunged fill-port! Inside, there are 2 kidney-shaped fill holes that are covered by a rubber sleeve to help prevent leaks. The holes on this sleeve are very small; it was OK for our 10 mL TPD bottles here in the UK, but not for bottles with wider nozzles like short fill bottles, so this is something to definitely bear in mind.
The coils press fit from the bottom, and the coils need to slot into the grooves properly to create a solid seal. I didn’t experience any leaking with this pod during my testing, which I am always happy to report.
Overall, I was really impressed with the ITO-X Pod, and a part of me hopes that maybe this will be the future of pod tanks!
For the coils, I had reviewed the ITO M3 coil (1.2 ohms, 8-12W) in my Doric 20 review (also available in the blog) and it performed the same. Flavour was decent at 7/10 and I found myself adjusting the airflow to around the middle setting for a nice combination of draw tightness and warmth. I’d recommend using 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids for this coil given that it is narrower.
What is new to me is the 0.5 ohms ITO M0 coil (18-25W), and I did try this coil at both MTL and RDTL. It can handle both! Although, for my preference, I used this coil more on medium MTL (with airflow at around 33% open) as it gave me awesome flavour (8/10) from the e-liquid I was using, and also a very warm draw. In RDTL, of course, it will not be cloudy or warm given the device wattage limitations, but for those who like a cool and tight RDTL, this coil can perform to that level. It was also able to handle thin 70/30 mL e-liquids I tested it with.
Overall: Yay or Nay?
Hmmm, this can be a tricky one…
As a whole, I had a great time vaping with the Drag Q Kit, especially in MTL. For someone like me who vapes MTL half the time with an RTA + mod combo, it makes for a good backup kit as it gives me a flavourful and warm MTL vape.
For a new switcher to vaping, I can recommend this kit due to its simplicity and the fact that there is effective airflow adjustment- new switchers can get that tight cigarette pull if they desire so.
For the hobbyist vaper that is an MTL purist, the Drag Q will probably not replace their main kit. But I will say this: for what is essentially a pod kit, MTL vaping with the Drag Q is pretty darn good!
